How many times have you observed a conversation where you know the message is not received by either party? Perhaps the topic has gotten off track, or maybe the issue led to a heated argument. Either way, neither of the individuals was open to dialogue.

So, what sparks the defenses, the side-tracks, or the need to bully the conversation? How do we present ourselves so we do not raise these red-flags? This course is full of strategies to incorporate into your communications tool-box. We will discuss what words immediately turn up defense and turn off dialogue. We will explore the important facets needed for a clear and results-oriented dialogue.  We will further review a way to structure critical conversations so the final outcome is a win-win for all. Finally, we will analyze the technique of open-ended questions and implement these positive objectives in everyday conversation.

This course is different from the Social Compass course in that in “Smart Mouth” we dissect the psychology behind word selection and develop a template to use to get the conversation back on track. We will not address the communication styles or coaching techniques that are the focus of the “Social Compass” program.
